It is a great tragedy that the Chichester Arms burn down on Friday 18th March 2005. It is believed that the fire started at about 2.30pm with a kitchen extractor and spread in under the thatched roof. It quickly spread throughout the inside of the thatched roof which collapsed onto the first floor. Three quarters of the first floor finally collapsed onto the ground floor. The single storey extension to the rear was destroyed. All that remains intact is the commercial kitchen, cellar, toilets and the function / skittle room. The “Jewel Of The Crown” of Bishops Tawton has temporarily been lost and we all hope that it will not be for too long.
